Coach's Corner
The 1999/2000 Coventry Crusader team is
still in its developing stages.
We are far from peaking as a top flight National League
Division One club.
We've had some brilliant games during the course of the
year, especially against the Solent Stars. All three games have been our best performances
thus far. Our other better performance was against Teeside Mohawks who are the League
leaders.
Veterans have shown some promise early on in the season and
then midway through the season, with work commitments of Kevin Penny, injuries to Matt
Donaldson and the departure of Karim Houari, the Crusaders have found it difficult to stay
on top.
My philosophy this year is 'attitude, commitment and
game-time performance'. Those are the three issues I am stressing and basing my decisions
on those areas.
Attitude is towards your own performance. Are you trying to
get yourself into an international level of fitness? Do you work with your teammates? Are
you supportive or selfish? Are you happy to get your team-mates involved in the game or
are you a ball-hog? Are you supportive of the direction the team is trying to go and bring
a professional level of commitment in terms of attitude?
The second thing is commitment. Commitment to training, to
the team, to the games and to being the best you can be. Are you prepared to sacrifice to
the team in order for us to achieve or are you just there for yourself? You need to make
sure you are in good shape and healthy. Over and above the call of duty - that's
commitment.
The final point is game-time performance. If the first two
are in line the chances are that this will carry over into Saturday night. This is where
the rubber meets the road and the professional palace of an individual is showcased - in
the game. There are a lot of players that are brilliant trainers but they need to carry
that performance over to game-night.
