CRUSADERS NEWS
Manny's The GuyManny Shareland has shown what hard can do for a young man who sets his sights on
gold and goes for it.
Emmanuel Shareland (Manny) has been in Coventry since
August and has trained with the Crusaders since the first day of practise. He moved to
Coventry in August to take a year out with the Fly team.
Fly was set up on a trial basis with Coventry Youth For
Christ and the Crusader Foundation. The idea was that the two organisations would select
up to an eight member team which would train with Youth For Christ in youth work and
outreach, and train with the Crusaders basketball team as basketball players.
In that way they would be equipped to go into schools and
take assemblies, coach basketball in schools and colleges and work with both organisations
in their community work. Fly would therefore be in a very strategic position for forming
relationships with young people and being good role models for them.
Last August four young men were selected to begin the Fly
team. They have trained hard and long with CYFC and the Crusaders basketball team. They
have spent hours and hours of time doing community work for both organisations and they
have been exemplary examples of what being young and being Christian is all about.
Manny has been an integral part of the Fly team, and
because of his basketball skills has actually played for the senior Crusaders basketball
team from time to time.
Manny is fast, he makes good passes, he rebounds, block
shots and dunks the ball. He adds excitement to the game when he is involved.
Lately he has been called up to help boost the BUPA
Crusaders on their quest for wins. He came in against Plymouth last weekend and showed
great presence of mind, bringing the ball up the court and setting up plays.
He did a great job filling his role in the team that day,
but the team struggled to do anything right, and the result was the lowest scoring game in
Crusaders history.
For Manny, it was another day of being on the Fly team.
Tomorrow he will have other obligations to fulfil and they will be different once again
from the day before. He will meet them head on, with a smile on his face, willing to do
whatever is required of him.
He is just the kind of guy to have on your team.
