In their second game of the weekend Crusaders looked much
more like themselves. Sunday afternoon they had an early tip off at Westminster Warriors
home court.
With little time to rest or come to terms with their heavy
loss on Saturday night, Crusaders had to quickly regroup and regain their aggression or
suffer the consequences.
Crusaders travelled to London without their stalwart
player, Dip Donaldson, as other commitments kept him from being available for the early
tip off in London, but the team this year has depth and experience and others on the team
made up the difference for his absence.
The game was a close contest throughout. By half time the
Crusaders were hanging on to a narrow lead, 33-29, but could not become comfortable with
such a small margin.
The Crusaders defence was outstanding, keeping Westminster
threats contained and the pressure on, as once again Alaster Spiers for Crusaders
dominated the game with his inside game shooting and rebounding missed shots for
put-backs.
He ended up the game scoring 30 points - his highest game
total with the Crusader club so far.
One of the most remarkable events that occurred during the
game was the technical foul awarded to Assistant Coach Marcus Garvey, the laid back,
soft-spoken man who rarely gets ruffled. Officials took exception to his contest of a
call, and gave him the Technical on the spot.
Other than that, the games excitement lay in the
Crusaders camp, as they came away from London with 2 more points to their tally, and
perhaps a new position in the league table.
The win was an important one for the Crusaders campaign,
and will help them as they prepare for the unknown Colchester as Crusaders look forward to
being at home again next weekend.
