Player Profile
Sam Spare
Missing out on just one game in
his inaugural Crusader season, Sam Spare could not have shown a greater commitment to the
club last season and therefore is another welcome return ahead of the 2004/05 campaign.
As Warwickshires Basketball
Development Officer, it seemed only fitting that Sam be included in the counties number
one basketball team, and in particular his defensive prowess has been vital to the
Crusaders game.
Quiet and unassuming Sam, can at
times appear shrewdly inconspicuous when on court. Not necessarily noticed but always
there.
Not a huge points scorer himself,
but a creator of many Crusader points with his ability to rebound the ball at both ends of
the court and his uncanny skill of being in the right place at the right time.
Sam Spare never fails to give
100% every time he steps out on court and would be an asset to any team.
We are just grateful he chose
Crusaders.
Sam was brought up on basketball,
he has played the game since he was just five years old, having accompanied his father
Robert during his own playing days.
Now in a complete turn of events
his father accompanies Sam to most Crusader games.
Born in Derby, Sam spent his
formative years playing for Burton and Nottinghamshire.
He also in attended a number of
summer camps including an early Crusaders venture!
Having been entrusted with the
responsibility of developing basketball within Greater Warwickshire, it was inevitably not
long before Sam met up with Crusaders Derrick Pope and Dip Donaldson, and never
forgetting a talent Dip was able to recall Sam as a keen twelve year old attending that
summer camp.
Attendance at a squad training
session followed and by the next weekend, the down to earth and approachable former Oxford
University Centre was pulling on a Crusader vest to step onto court for the team who he
had frequently watched as a boy.
Off the court Sam enjoys going
out with friends and generally having a good time. Nevertheless he takes his commitment to
play for the Crusaders very seriously and makes sure he put in the hours to ensure that he
performs to the best of his ability on match night.
He
finds working within basketball an ideal job, as his job is the sport he loves and hopes
that my efforts will lead to more and more children participating in the sport and
deriving the same enjoyment from it as he has done and continues to do.
When asked about the future Sam
says
My position here
was initially for twelve months but, given
how well I have settled into the area, the great team spirit within the club as well as
the dedication shown by such a number of fans, I would hope to remain a Crusaders player
for as long as I can make a contribution to the success of the team
This seasons fixture
list looks very challenging. I know I am looking forward to it and am sure the same goes
for the rest of the team. I hope to be able to improve my contribution at both
ands of the court and help to ensure continued success for the club
