The
Crusader Wheelchair Basketball Academy organised a special evening of
fun and friendship with a lot of wheelchair basketball thrown in for a
special group of staff from the National Grid.
Most of
the group were non basketball players and none had experience of using a
sports wheelchair
The group
were introduced to the basics of chair control and basketball skills
before participating in a series of skills games led by one of our
youngest members, 7 year old Zem Zhou, supported by the Academy’s
coaching team Paul Claridge, Keith Batty and Sahail Ahmed and Zem’s dad
Tony (a regular club player and National Grid employee.
After 80
minutes of hilarity, during which a lot of skills developed, the group
took on the challenge of a basketball game.
At the
beginning of the evening two very special gifts were made by National
Grid staff. The Academy chairman, Niki Cross and Mobility Chief
Executive, Ann Munn, were both presented with cheques and applications
for matched giving from the Charities Aid Foundation which doubled the
gift for both organisation to £1600.
Both
organisations were grateful for the donation which will be used to
improve the experience of wheelchair users in community activity.
The
evening finished with a Chinese meal at Wing Wah and firm friendships
being made between the visitors and the academy.
